The Fat Head Minnow is a fly I came up with and is kind of cross between a Gurgler and a Resin Body Minnow (like a Glass Minnow.) The Fat Head Minnow fly pattern is a perfect fly to tie on when fish are actively feeding on small minnows at the surface of the water. The foam head floats at the surface while the resin covered eyes, body, and tail sit just subsurface.
This fly has been fashioned to look like a mosquitofish, but you can change up the colors as you see fit to match your hatch. The Fat Head Minnow is perfect for catching American Shad, Hickory Shad, Specks, Bass or really any species of fish that are actively feeding at the surface. Heck, I bet if you tied it in all white it would be deadly in the salt too! Tie some up and give it a shot!
